I've been able to overcome it by canceling the attempt and trying again later. When reattempting I first entered the email address and password instead of immediately going to manual settings. It will obviously fail to authenticate and sync, but will then ask if you want to use manual settings. You might try deleting the account you set up, powering down the Pre, and setting the account back up after rebooting. If possible, I'd suggest using the IMAP setup instead of the POP3 though.
